How to keep your Dog’s Ears Clean and Free from Infection
Your dog can’t tell you, but sometimes they get a yucky build-up in their ears. It needs to be cleaned to keep from your pooch getting an ear infection. Here are a few simple tips to keep you beloved pet’s ears free from grime.
Temperament Test
Before you try anything, make sure that your dog will tolerate you poking around his ears. Touch his ear and move it around, being careful not to hurt him. Praise him for being good.
Clean
Pull the ear back so that you can see the cavity inside. If there is a black or brown build-up you will need to take a warm washcloth and gently rub the dirt, rotating the cloth so each swipe reveals a clean area to rub with. For deeper gunk, very gently and slowly insert a cotton swab and remove any additional funk. Use infant safety cotton swabs. They are larger and will help prevent a puncture to the ear if your dog spooks and jumps at the sensation.
Maintain
Wash the inside of you dog’s war weekly with warm soapy water. Make sure to rinse well. You don’t want a soapy build up on top of the dirt.
You dog will be healthier and happier with clean ears, and you will feel much better knowing they aren’t uncomfortable.
